01Begin with the student's real schedule, preparation, and available resources
Dr. Li first reviews grade level, interests, prior coursework, weekly time, equipment access, and relevant fair deadlines. This prevents an impressive-sounding idea from becoming an unworkable project.
02Build a biomedical question that can produce original, interpretable evidence
Potential directions include hydrogels and regenerative materials, flexible biosensors, and microfluidics or organ-on-chip. The project scope is narrowed around measurable variables, controls, replication, safety, and feasibility.
03Use remote scientific review and selective laboratory resources appropriately
Literature review, project design, milestone critique, data review, and defense preparation can be completed remotely. Experimental access depends on the project, safety requirements, capacity, and the student's readiness.
04Prepare the student to explain and defend every research decision independently
The student keeps original records and must understand the question, method, data, uncertainty, and limitations. Mentorship strengthens scientific judgment without replacing authentic student work.
