The right starting date is not determined by the ISEF finals alone. Students qualify through a Society-affiliated fair, and each fair controls its own calendar and may add local requirements. Planning should therefore begin with the local pathway and the research risk—not with a poster deadline.

The affiliated fair is the student's route toward ISEF. Families should identify the correct fair, confirm eligibility and school participation requirements, and record its registration, approval, and competition dates before committing to a project schedule.

Complete the research plan before experimentation

Current ISEF rules require a research plan that defines the question or engineering goal, materials, procedures, risks, analysis, and sources. This planning phase also reveals which forms and approvals may be required.

Allow approval time before any restricted work

Projects involving human participants, vertebrate animals, potentially hazardous biological agents, or tissue require review and approval before experimentation. Some engineering projects also trigger human-participant or hazardous-device rules. Beginning early cannot repair work that started before required approval.

Use a pilot to test the measurement system

A pilot should determine whether the method produces a stable, interpretable signal. It is better to discover weak range, high noise, or poor repeatability early than to collect a large dataset with an unreliable method.

Reserve time for analysis and independent defense

A project is not finished when data collection stops. Students need time to check reproducibility, analyze uncertainty, create figures, state limitations, and practice explaining why each design decision was made. The interview carries substantial weight in ISEF judging.
